Elevating Our Athletic Experience
Erie Catholic Introduces Sport Coordinators for the 2026–2027 Year
Athletics are an important part of the Erie Catholic student experience, helping students grow in confidence, discipline, teamwork, sportsmanship, leadership, and school pride.
Across the fall, winter, and spring seasons, Erie Catholic students have the opportunity to participate in various athletic programs: basketball, cheerleading, cross country, football, golf, lacrosse, soccer, swimming, tennis, and track and field. As participation and interest continue to grow, Erie Catholic is strengthening the structure behind its athletic programs to better support students, families, coaches, and campuses.
For the 2026–2027 athletics year, Erie Catholic School System is introducing Sport Coordinators to provide system-wide leadership for assigned athletic programs.
The Sport Coordinator role was created to strengthen consistency, communication, and organization across Erie Catholic athletics. Each Sport Coordinator will serve as the system-wide point of leadership for their assigned sport, helping to support coaches, students, and families across campuses. This structure allows Erie Catholic to better coordinate practice schedules and available facilities, improve communication among coaches and families, streamline the student-athlete experience across campuses, and continue building athletic programs that reflect the mission and values of the school system.
“Our goal is to create opportunities for every student who is interested in athletics to participate, grow, and feel connected to their school community,” said Travis Washko, president of Erie Catholic. “This structure helps us better support our coaches and families while continuing to build programs that are organized, welcoming, and focused on the development of our student-athletes.”
Sport Coordinators work directly with Erie Catholic’s Athletic Director and assist with schedules, rosters, coach communication, compliance, family communication, and faith-based sportsmanship. Each Sport Coordinator also coaches at least one team level within their assigned sport.
The 2026–2027 ECSS Sport Coordinators are as follows:
- Cheerleading — Carly Hammer
Carly is an Erie native, former St. Jude cheerleader, and lifelong supporter of cheer. She is excited to help grow participation and expand competition opportunities for Erie Catholic students.
- Cross Country — Gary Mokris
Gary has been a longtime champion of Erie Catholic cross country and track and field. His enthusiasm for running and commitment to our students have already made a meaningful impact on the program.
- Football — Andrew Huzar
Andrew brings leadership experience as our current head coach for the developmental team in Erie Knights football program and is committed to helping students learn, grow, and compete safely.
- Golf — Ryan Bickel
Ryan serves as manager and club professional at J.C. Martin Golf Course and has been an invaluable partner to Erie Catholic in coordinating practices and tournaments.
- Lacrosse — Andrew Smykowski
Andrew has played an important role in supporting the growth of lacrosse within Erie Catholic athletics and expanding opportunities for younger student-athletes. Under his leadership, Erie Catholic was able to offer lacrosse to grades kindergarten through eighth grade this past school year.
Swimming — Katie Dufala
Katie is a former collegiate swimmer and experienced athletic volunteer whose organization and communication have helped create a strong experience for Erie Catholic swim families.
Tennis — Pat Grab
Pat is the tennis head coach at Cathedral Prep and owner of Westwood Racquet Club. He will continue helping grow our tennis program, including support for a new developmental division.
Track and Field — Toni Mazanowski
Toni brings coaching experience and strong organizational skills to one of Erie Catholic’s largest athletic programs.
Basketball and soccer will be coordinated directly by Erie Catholic’s Athletic Director.
At Erie Catholic, athletics are about more than practices, games, and competitions. They are another way students learn commitment, humility, perseverance, respect for others, and how to use their gifts in service to a team. Through this new structure, Erie Catholic is continuing to build athletic programs that create meaningful opportunities for students while supporting the whole child and the mission of Catholic education. We look forward to a wonderful year ahead!
