Curriculum

Language Arts:

Kindergarten follows the Journey’s Reading Series, which is Common Core Aligned.  Throughout the year, the children move from letter sound recognition to reading and writing sentences.  We incorporate both a phonetic approach as well as building a sight word vocabulary.

Math:

The children acquire several key math skills during the year.  Some of these skills include counting and number recognition, decomposing numbers, naming and distinguishing between 2D and 3D shapes, non-standard measurement, and fluently adding and subtracting within 5.  The children are exposed to a variety of strategies to help aid their learning and retention.

Religion:

Kindergarten children learn we are all children of God and part of God’s family.  They learn about God’s love, creation, and the life of Jesus.

Science:

Throughout the year the children participate in a variety of science projects, many of which implement the use of the scientific method.

Teacher Bio:

KA Sally Garske

Hello!  My name is Sally Garske and I spend my days in the greatest grade level, Kindergarten.  There is no place I’d rather be.  The curriculum, content, creativity and kids make for an engaging place to be.
I graduated from The University of Pittsburgh with a dual Bachelor of Science degree in Early Childhood and Elementary Education.  Most of my 27 years of teaching experience is in Kindergarten!  Three of those years I taught 4 year old preschool.  I even had the opportunity to spend one year in first grade.  Primary is my passion!!

KB  Janet Blakeslee

I received a teaching degree from Mercyhurst College (University).  My husband, John and I have 3 children who graduated from OLCS.  Working in a Catholic School and being able to share my faith is very important to me.  This is my 22nd year working at St. Jude/OLCS.  I worked in the kindergarten program for five years, taught second grade for nine years and this is my eighth year teaching kindergarten. I really enjoy seeing students excited about learning and trying new things and hope that I help develop that passion in every child that walks through my door.
