Celebrating Catholic Schools Week

Erie Catholic School System, along with diocese and schools across the nation, is celebrating Catholic Schools Week Jan. 28-Feb. 3, 2018.

Erie Catholic began the week with open houses at each of its six schools.  "We had a great turnout across all six schools, and our hallways and classrooms looked awesome!" reports Damon Finazzo, president of Erie Catholic.

Additional highlights of the week-long celebration include:

  • Great Mass with Bishop Persico -- All Erie Catholic sixth- through eighth-grade students, along with middle school students from St. Gregory School in North East and Mother Teresa Academy, participated in a special mass at Saint Peter Cathedral, with Bishop Persico as celebrant and more than a dozen concelebrants. Students fully participated in the liturgy through prayer, singing, altar serving, lectoring and cantoring.
  • Patron Saint selection -- Erie Catholic will soon select a patron saint and is inviting the broader community to participate in the process. You can review the biographies of the patron candidates and then cast a vote online. Anyone who is not able to vote online can call the Erie Catholic Office at (814) 806-2423 to register your vote. Voting ends on Thursday, February 1 at 4:00 p.m. The patron saint will be announced following Catholic Schools Week.
  • Mission and Vision Statements -- Erie Catholic recently established mission and vision statements and is sharing these statements during CSW. The process of deveoping the mission and vision began with teachers and staff generating a list of key characteristics of their schools, students and communities. Their input helped shape the discussion as the Erie Catholic board developed the mission statement:

The Erie Catholic School System, in collaboration with the Diocese of Erie and in partnership with family and community, maximizes every child’s academic and spiritual potential through engaging learning experiences and the gospel values of Jesus Christ, in a welcoming and safe environment.

Based on the principles of the Catholic faith, Erie Catholic will be the school system of choice by instilling in our students a strong moral character, skills for academic success, and a zeal for service to others.

In addition to system-wide events, each school is sponsoring daily activities that focus on the Vision themes of developing strong moral character, skills for academic success and zeal for service to others.
