A Season of Renewal: Growing in Faith This Easter

Each year, the Easter season reminds us that our faith is never meant to stand still. Spring arrives, the days grow longer, and the Church invites us to reflect on the promise of new life that comes through the Resurrection of Christ. Easter is an invitation to begin again, to renew our hearts, and to grow deeper in our relationship with God.

For families in our Catholic school community, this season offers a beautiful opportunity to reflect on how faith is lived each day — at home, at school, and in the life of the parish. Catholic education has always been more than what happens in the classroom. It is part of the larger mission of the Church, where parents, pastors, teachers, and students walk together in faith. We know that family life is busy, routines change, and it is not always easy to stay connected in the ways we hope to. Some families attend Mass every week. Others come when they are able. Some may feel that it has been a long time since they have been part of parish life at all. Wherever you find yourself today, know that the Church always welcomes you.

Simple Ways to Begin This Easter

Easter is a season that reminds us that we can begin again at any moment. If you have been thinking about reconnecting or diving deeper with the life of the Church, this season is a beautiful time to start. Even small steps can help families grow in faith and feel more at home in their parish community. You might consider:

Attending Mass together, even if it has been a while. Simply being present is a meaningful place to begin.

Visiting your parish for a Sunday, a weekday Mass, or a time of quiet prayer.

Reintroducing prayer at home in a simple way, such as a short prayer before meals or bedtime.

Participating in a parish event, service opportunity, or family activity when the chance arises.

Talking with your child about what they are learning in religion class and sharing those conversations as a family.

Reaching out to your parish if you have questions or are curious about ways to become more involved.

No step is too small. Each moment we turn our hearts back toward God is a moment of grace.

We are strongest when the partnership between family, school, and parish is alive and growing. When children see their parents living the faith, when they experience the joy of community, and when they know they belong to something greater than themselves, the lessons of Catholic education take root in lasting ways.

This Easter season, take a moment to ask:

Where is God inviting you to begin again?

How can our family grow closer to Christ?

How can we become more connected to the life of the Church?

We pray for all of our students, families, pastors, and campus communities during this joyful season of Easter. May the hope of the Resurrection fill your homes with peace, strengthen your faith, and draw us ever closer to Christ and to one another.

At Erie Catholic, we believe students learn best when curiosity meets opportunity. Across all five campuses, teachers are creating classrooms where students are encouraged to explore big ideas, test their theories, and discover how academic concepts come to life through hands-on learning. This commitment to meaningful, inquiry-driven instruction has been especially visible this winter, as students engaged in a range of STEAM activities, relaunched competitive robotics, and earned top recognition at the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science (PJAS). Together, these experiences highlight how deeply STEAM is woven into the fabric of an Erie Catholic education.

Most recently, sixth graders designed and tested aluminum foil boats to see how many marbles each could hold. After evaluating their first attempt, they worked collaboratively to improve their designs, with two groups successfully creating boats strong enough to hold forty marbles without sinking. Even our youngest learners are encouraged to think outside the box. First graders read

The Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science (PJAS) challenges students to design an experiment, collect and analyze data, and present and defend their conclusions. It is an advanced academic experience, and the success of our students speaks powerfully to the quality of instruction and hands-on learning happening across Erie Catholic. The dedication to hands-on learning within our STEAM classrooms lays the foundation for exceptional achievements in competitions like PJAS.

From classrooms to competitions, Erie Catholic students are gaining the skills, confidence, and creativity needed to thrive. These programs build perseverance, strengthen collaboration, and spark the joy of discovery in forming young people who are not only academically prepared but also equipped to use their God-given talents with purpose. As we expand and deepen hands-on learning opportunities across the system, we look forward to seeing even more students explore, create, and achieve. The future of STEAM at Erie Catholic is bright, and these recent accomplishments are just the beginning!

Inside a gym buzzing with excitement, two Erie Catholic teams—Saint Jude’s Raider Robotics and Saint George’s LEGO Lancers—joined 25 other groups from across the region to compete in FIRST LEGO League’s regional tournament. The energy was contagious as students huddled over their robot tables, coaches leaned in with encouragement, teams cheered loudly for one another, and kindness flowed as freely as the creativity on display.

For many of our students, this was their first time ever competing in an event like this. Yet from the opening round, it was clear they were not only prepared, but they were also ready to soar.

Saint Jude’s Raider Robotics quickly realized they were holding their own against teams with years of experience. Their determination paid off as the Raiders earned second place with 335 points in the Robot Competition, a remarkable accomplishment for a first-year team navigating their first official meet. As their coach shared, they didn’t know what to expect walking in, but they left knowing they belonged.

“We knew the competition was experienced and we didn’t have any idea of what to expect at the tournament,” said Brian Rehrig, parent and coach for the Raider Robotics team. “It was a pleasant surprise and testament to the team’s hard work to compete with the other teams so effectively.”

Just a few tables over, Saint George’s LEGO Lancers were having a standout day of their own. Made up mostly of fifth- and sixth-graders, the Lancers earned second place for their Innovation Project, taking home a LEGO trophy that will soon find its place in the campus's display case. Their robot performance was equally impressive, tying for 8th place overall and scoring 230 points.

“One of the judges came up to me afterward to say how impressed he was with the team and how strong our trajectory looks going forward,” said Kevin Miceli, parent and coach of the LEGO Lancers. “We’ve got our sights set on states next year!”

This season’s FIRST LEGO League challenge was built around the theme “UNEARTHED℠,” inviting students into an archaeological-inspired adventure that connects the past with the future. Teams explored how artifacts, innovations, and discoveries from long ago can inform and inspire the solutions of tomorrow.

While each campus celebrated its own achievements, the weekend was also a testament to what is possible when our system and parents come together to invest in hands-on learning. Parents volunteered hours after school and PTOs helped get things off the ground. Families rearranged schedules to get children to practices and competitions. And through it all, the system’s commitment to STEAM learning created space for students to explore robotics, coding, engineering, and teamwork in ways that strengthen both confidence and academic growth.

According to the MIT Media Lab, research consistently shows that hands-on, experiential learning can increase retention by up to 90% and robotics in particular strengthens problem-solving, spatial reasoning, and mathematical thinking. Meanwhile, programs like FIRST LEGO League are linked to increased confidence, teamwork skills, and long-term interest in STEM. These opportunities align beautifully with how children at this age learn best: through doing, experimenting, collaborating, failing safely, and trying again while surrounded by adults who believe in their potential.

“Opportunities like FIRST LEGO League make challenging students in new ways accessible even to our youngest learners,” said Lisa Panighetti, Vice President of Academic Affairs for Erie Catholic. “It gives students a chance to explore, imagine, build, and work together in ways that reflect the very best of what we want for them academically and personally.”

FIRST Lego League has programming for preschool through eighth grade. Erie Catholic will continue exploring how to widen these opportunities within Erie Catholic, ensuring more of our students can participate in this kind of joyful, meaningful learning.

Congratulations, Raider Robotics and LEGO Lancers teams! Thank you for representing your campuses with joy and humility. We can’t wait to see what they dream up next season!

This is just the beginning for robotics across Erie Catholic. If you’re someone who feels called to help bring hands-on STEM opportunities to more students and more campuses, our Advancement Office would welcome a conversation. Please

Erie Catholic Lacrosse Expands to All K-8 Students

The Erie Catholic School System is expanding its Erie Knights Lacrosse program to include all K-8 grade levels within the system, now including kindergarten through second graders.

Since its launch five years ago, Erie Catholic Knights Lacrosse has steadily strengthened in participation, coaching, and vision. When the program first began, the long-term goal was always to create an athletic pathway that would eventually welcome students of all ages. That vision now becomes reality as Erie Catholic introduces the sport to its youngest learners at a time when lacrosse is experiencing unprecedented interest across the country.

“We are so excited to continue growing lacrosse at the youth level as this has been the goal since we started this program,” said Andrew Smykowski, coach for the team. “It’s been great to get lacrosse in front of as many boys and girls as possible. It is truly for everyone and we want to share that in a fun, fast paced environment that focuses on the development of our students.”

Over the past two decades, lacrosse has been recognized as one of the fastest-growing team sports in the United States, with national participation more than tripling since the early 2000s. This trend is especially strong at the youth and scholastic levels, where more families seek sports that blend conditioning, skill development, strategy, and teamwork. This national surge underscores that Erie Catholic is not simply expanding a program—it is opening the door for students to participate in a sport whose momentum and appeal are rising across the country.

“Athletics help form confident and capable students,” said Travis Washko, president of Erie Catholic. "Providing our youngest students the opportunity to experience a sport like lacrosse allows them to grow in ways that support their whole development.”

Lacrosse supports coordination, balance, and spatial awareness while also encouraging communication, cooperation, and confidence, which is developmentally aligned with how younger children learn best. National youth clinics show that roughly 85% of new players are experiencing lacrosse for the first time in early elementary grades, demonstrating how well the sport fits the needs and interests of young learners.

“Beginning with foundational skills is fundamental to athletic success as our students move on to competitive programs,” said Tanner Verplancke, athletic director at Erie Catholic. “It creates a natural and healthy developmental pathway that benefits students in athletics and in the classroom.”

Students interested in playing may attend an upcoming clinic before season registration begins in March. For more information, parents may download the information flyer in PlusPortals or reach out to Coach Smykowski directly: andrew.smykowski@cathedralprep.com.

Erie Catholic Students Gather for Catholic Schools Week

Middle school students from the Erie Catholic School System and Mother Teresa Academy came together this week for the annual Great Mass, a longstanding Catholic Schools Week tradition that brings students, teachers, and clergy together in shared worship.

The Mass was celebrated by Bishop Lawrence Persico, along with parish pastors from each campus, and Erie Catholic’s chaplain, Fr. Kevin Holland. Held during Catholic Schools Week, the liturgy offers students a chance to unite as one community in prayer, reflection, and celebration.

Erie Catholic President Travis Washko said the gathering reflects the momentum he’s seen building across the system.

“As we celebrate Catholic Schools Week, I’ve been reflecting on the remarkable movement already underway throughout our schools,” Washko said. “In these first months, I’ve seen a community ready to come together in new ways.”

This year’s national theme—Unity in Faith and Community—aligns closely with Erie Catholic’s priorities.

“The theme feels especially fitting as we step into a new era as a system,” Washko said. “This is a time when our shared Catholic identity guides us, our collaboration strengthens us, and our mission calls us to move forward together.”

A central focus of Catholic Schools Week is service, something Washko says is rooted deeply in Erie Catholic’s culture.

“Service isn’t just something we do—it’s a way of life we form in our students. You can see it when students support each other, when families rally around someone in need, and when our schools and parishes work side by side. That spirit of compassion and love is the heart of Catholic education.”

The Great Mass also marks a moment of looking ahead. Erie Catholic will celebrate its 10-year anniversary in Fall 2026, a milestone that will shape the future direction of Catholic education in the region.

These next years will define how Erie Catholic strengthens its Catholic identity, deepens unity across campuses, and ensures every child entrusted to us grows in mind, body, and spirit.

Throughout the week, each Erie Catholic school has been celebrating the daily themes highlighted nationally by Catholic Schools Week. These include days dedicated to celebrating parishes, community, students, the nation, vocations, faculty and staff, and families. Classrooms across all five campuses have participated in activities ranging from special prayer services and service projects to classroom reflections and schoolwide events. The intention of each theme is to help students understand the many people and partnerships that shape their education and to recognize the ways Catholic identity is lived out in everyday school life.

A Christmas Blessing from Erie Catholic

As Christmas approaches, the Advent season invites us to pause, reflect, and prepare our hearts for what truly matters. At Erie Catholic, this time of year offers a meaningful opportunity to give thanks for the gift of community and the shared mission that unites our system.

Advent is a season rooted in hope, anticipation, and quiet preparation. Across every campus, these values come to life each day as students grow not only in knowledge and skill, but in compassion, generosity, and faith. Our classrooms, hallways, and prayer spaces reflect a commitment to educating the whole child—mind, body, and spirit—while helping students understand the deeper meaning of the season.

The Christmas story reminds us that God chose to enter the world in humility and love, bringing light into the darkness and hope to every home. This message sits at the heart of Catholic education and guides our work as we partner with families to form young people who are grounded in faith, kindness, and service to others.

This season is also a time of gratitude. We are thankful for the dedicated faculty and staff who serve our students with care, the families who place their trust in our system, and the broader community that supports Erie Catholic through prayer, encouragement, and engagement.

As we look toward the new year, we do so with optimism and purpose. Important work is underway to strengthen our system, deepen connections across our campuses, and ensure that every student and family feels supported, valued, and proud to be part of Erie Catholic.

May this holy season bring peace, joy, and rest to all those we serve. From all of us at Erie Catholic, we wish you a very Merry Christmas and a blessed New Year filled with hope and promise!

United in Prayer: Virtual Rosary for the Blessed Mother

Throughout October, Catholics around the world honor Mary, our Blessed Mother, through the devotion of the Holy Rosary. It’s a time to pause, reflect, and draw closer to Jesus through the eyes and heart of His mother—a gentle reminder that prayer connects us, strengthens us, and brings peace to our hearts and homes.

Last week, the Erie Catholic School System came together as one faith-filled community to pray the Rosary virtually. From classrooms across all five campuses, students, teachers, and leaders joined in prayer, each taking a decade of the Rosary as we lifted our intentions to God.

The virtual Rosary was a beautiful expression of unity where voices, young and old, came together in rhythm and reverence. Each decade was led by a different campus, creating a living example of what it means to be one system rooted in faith and love for Christ and His Mother.

“As our students prayed, they were reminded that every “Hail Mary” is a small act of love, a chance to quiet our hearts, to listen, and to grow in faith together,” said Travis Washko, president of Erie Catholic. “These moments, though brief, form the foundation of a lifelong relationship with God.”

The Rosary is sometimes called “the Gospel on a string.” Each decade invites us to meditate on the life of Jesus and Mary—His birth, ministry, suffering, death, and resurrection. Praying it together as a family can be a meaningful way to bring faith into daily life.

Here are a few ways families can keep the spirit of the Rosary alive at home:

             Start small:

Pray one decade together before bedtime or dinner. Even a few minutes of prayer can bring peace and closeness.

             Make it meaningful:

Invite each family member to share an intention for their decade, like someone they want to pray for or something they’re thankful for.

             Create a sacred space:

Light a candle or place a small statue or image of Mary nearby to help center your family in prayer.

             Pray on the go:

The Rosary can be prayed in the car on the way to school, while taking a walk together, or wherever your day takes you.

As the final prayers echoed through our classrooms, the quiet reverence of our students lifting their voices together served as a powerful reminder of who we are and what binds us. In a world that moves quickly, moments like this slow us down and re-center us on what matters most.

May the peace of the Rosary continue to fill our hearts and homes long after October ends, reminding us that when we pray together, we grow together in faith and love as one Erie Catholic community.

Ten Minutes of Grace in Third Grade

Ten Minutes of Grace: How Third Grade Reminds Us What Matters

Pictured: Third-grade students at Saint Jude have chosen to dedicate ten minutes of their recess each day to prayer after learning about Saint Carlo Acutis and Saint Pier Giorgio Frassati.

It started like any other recess. The bell rang, laughter filled the air, and third graders raced across the playground to climb, chase, and share stories that only make sense when you’re nine years old.

But that ordinary moment turned extraordinary when one student offered a simple suggestion that changed the day:

“What if we gave up ten minutes of recess to pray?”

The class had just learned about two modern saints — Saint Carlo Acutis and Saint Pier Giorgio Frassati — who were both young people who found holiness not in grand gestures, but in how they lived their everyday lives. Moved by their stories, the students decided to do the same. Without hesitation, the entire class agreed. They ended recess early, gathered inside, and prayed together.

For ten quiet minutes, the joyful sounds of the playground gave way to stillness, reverence, and unity rooted in faith.

Faith in Action: Living the Lessons of the Saints

What happened in that classroom was more than a sweet gesture. It was a living example of Catholic education in action.

These students recognized the sacred worth of time spent in prayer and how it nurtures their relationship with God and one another. It is a beautiful reminder that the smallest acts of sacrifice and solidarity can transform hearts. Their decision to give up part of recess (something every child treasures) demonstrated a deep understanding of what it means to live faith joyfully, generously, and together.

           The Gift of Stillness

In a world that moves fast, it’s easy to believe that doing more is the path to meaning. But these third graders remind us that sometimes, the holiest thing we can do is stop.

Ten minutes might not sound like much, but it can be sacred time and a chance to listen, to breathe, and to be with God. Their choice shows that holiness can grow in the smallest spaces of an ordinary day, even between jump ropes and soccer games.

What could we set aside — even for ten minutes — to make more room for God?

           Forming Hearts, Not Just Minds

At Erie Catholic, moments like these reflect what we strive to cultivate every day: not only strong students, but intentional disciples in our children, who see faith as something to live, not just learn. Through lessons inspired by the saints, daily prayer, service projects, and acts of kindness, our students learn that holiness is not about perfection. It’s about presence and choosing God again and again in small, everyday ways.

At Home: Encouraging Faith in Everyday Moments

Parents play a vital role in nurturing the same spirit their children experience at school. Here are a few simple ways families can bring moments of grace into daily life:

             Create sacred pauses:

Invite your child to take a few quiet minutes before dinner or bedtime to thank God for the day and pray for others.

             Connect faith to daily choices:

Talk about how acts of kindness, patience, or forgiveness at school reflect the love of Christ.

             Model small sacrifices:

Let your child see you give up something — time, comfort, or convenience — for prayer or service, and explain why it matters.

             Celebrate the saints:

Share the stories of modern saints like Carlo Acutis and Pier Giorgio Frassati, showing that holiness can look like them — young, joyful, and full of life.

When faith is woven into daily routines, it becomes a source of peace, purpose, and connection, much like it did for those third graders who found grace in just ten minutes of prayer.

Annual Pet Blessing: A Simple Gathering, A Joyful Tradition

In celebration of the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, Erie Catholic continued a tradition of gathering together with pets, families, and members of our school campus communities for a special pet blessing.

With joyful hearts (and some wagging tails), families brought their animal companions to receive a blessing from our campus pastors. After the prayer, each pet received an individual blessing a sign of our interconnectedness with all of creation.

A Saint Who Saw All Life as Sacred

The Feast of St. Francis, celebrated each year on October 4th, to honor Francis of Assisi. St. Francis was known for his deep humility, joyful spirit, and reverence for all living things. He saw every creature as a reflection of God’s love, referring to animals as brothers and sisters and the earth itself as our shared home.

Bringing this teaching to life in a school setting helps students understand that faith extends beyond the classroom. It teaches them to recognize God’s presence in everyday experiences and to approach the world with kindness and responsibility.

Living Our Faith in Everyday Ways

At Erie Catholic, our mission is to form students in mind, body, and spirit and that means making space for faith in the rhythms of daily life. The Pet Blessing is a wonderful example of that. It invites students and families to connect what they learn about saints, Scripture, and Church teaching to something tangible: the unconditional love of a pet, the joy of shared community, and the sacredness of creation.

Celebrate the Spirit of St. Francis at Home

Here are a few simple ways your family can honor the legacy of St. Francis and live out our Catholic values this week:

             Bless Your Pets at Home:

If your child has another pet at home or simply wants to revisit the experience, take a moment to say a prayer together for your family pets. Encourage your child to say what they’re thankful for about their pet and ask for God's continued care over them.

             Spend Time in Creation:

Take a family walk, visit a local park, or simply sit outside and notice the beauty of nature. Talk about how St. Francis saw every part of creation as a reflection of God’s love.

Be of Service to God's Creatures:

Donate gently used towels or pet food to a local animal shelter or consider collecting items from neighbors, friends, and family to give to a shelter in need. An act of stewardship and compassion aligns perfectly with Catholic Social Teaching.

             Read Together:

Share a story about St. Francis or animals in Scripture. Use this as a chance to talk about how we’re called to love and protect all living things.

Say the Prayer of St. Francis Together:

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace...This prayer is a powerful way to reinforce the values of empathy, peace, and humility at home.

By bringing these small acts into your family life, you’re helping your child grow in faith and character—living out the message of St. Francis in everyday ways.

           In Closing

We are grateful to our campus pastors for sharing in this wonderful event for our school communities. Whether a pet was present in person, in a photo, or held close in spirit, we hope this tradition left everyone feeling a little more grounded, joyful, and connected in faith. May we continue to raise children who are kind, compassionate, and faithful toward all of God’s creation.

A New Chapter for Erie Catholic

As we begin a new school year, I am filled with gratitude and excitement for what lies ahead for the Erie Catholic School System.

First, I want to offer my heartfelt thanks to Janice Whiteman, who served as Erie Catholic's transition director since February, for her extraordinary dedication. In this unique role, she provided steady leadership to our principals, helped prepare our campuses for the year ahead, and guided the system with the same passion for Catholic education that has always defined her service. Because of her hard work, Erie Catholic is well-positioned to continue its mission of forming young hearts and minds in faith, knowledge, and service.

Now, as I step into my role as president, I look forward to building on that strong foundation. Together with our principals, teachers, and families, my focus will be threefold: to welcome more families into our schools by growing enrollment, to joyfully share the great things happening across all of our campuses, and to listen closely to our parents so we can better understand how to serve the needs of today’s students.

But this work cannot rest on our schools alone. The beauty of Catholic education is that it flourishes when it is rooted in the life of the Church and supported by the wider community. To our parents, grandparents, and parishioners: I encourage you to be active participants in this mission. Whether through volunteering in the classroom, supporting events, serving on a parish or school campus committee, or simply sharing your story of why Catholic education matters to you, your involvement strengthens our schools and inspires others to see its value.

I also want to extend a special word to our alumni. Erie has a rich history of Catholic education, and while many beloved schools have closed over the years, their legacy lives on in Erie Catholic. This is your home, too. It is a place where you can gather in fellowship, celebrate your roots, and help ensure that future generations of students experience the same blessings you once received. Your prayers, presence, and support allow us to carry forward a tradition of faith and excellence that has shaped our community for decades.

When we join together in faith, we not only shape the future of our students, but we also shine a light on the positive impact Catholic education has on our greater community. Our students learn to lead with integrity, to serve with compassion, and to see the world through the lens of faith—gifts that ripple far beyond the walls of our classrooms.

Let us begin this school year in prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of Catholic education in Erie. As we begin this new year, guide our students to grow in wisdom, faith, and love. Inspire our families, faculty, alumni, and parishioners to work together as stewards of this mission, so that Your presence may be known in our schools and throughout our community. Amen.

          With gratitude and hope,

          Travis Washko

ERIE, PA — The Erie Catholic School System (ECSS) is proud to announce the appointment of Travis Washko as its next president, effective August 1, 2025. A mission-driven leader with a deep commitment to education, Mr. Washko brings more than two decades of experience in school leadership across the United States and abroad.

A native of Danville, Pennsylvania, Mr. Washko is eager to return to the Commonwealth and lead Erie Catholic into a new era of growth, innovation, and faithful formation. His appointment follows a nationwide search and reflects the system’s strong commitment to Catholic identity, academic excellence, and long-term sustainability.

Mr. Washko has held leadership roles in schools and systems across multiple countries. He most recently led Dehong Xi’an, part of the Education in Motion (EiM) group—widely recognized as one of the premier school networks in the region in Asia. “Returning to Pennsylvania to lead Erie Catholic is both a professional honor and a personal homecoming,” said Washko. “From my first conversations with families, faculty, and school leaders, I felt the love and pride this community has for its school campuses. I’m excited to walk with students, parents, teachers, pastors, and community partners as we build upon the rich legacy of Catholic education in Erie.”

The Spirit of Wisdom Trivia Contest brought excitement, friendly competition, and a celebration of Catholic education to life as middle schoolers from across the Erie Catholic School System came together to put their faith knowledge to the test. Held at Saint Mark Center, the event welcomed teams of student teams from each of our schools — Blessed Sacrament, Our Lady of Peace, Saint George, Saint James, Saint Jude, and Saint Luke — for an unforgettable morning of learning, laughter, and community.

Rooted in the rich traditions of our Catholic faith, the contest challenged students with questions spanning Scripture, Saints, Sacraments, and Catholic teachings. It was inspiring to see how much these young minds have learned in the classroom and beyond, reflecting their commitment not only to academics but to the spiritual formation that lies at the heart of Catholic education.

The competition was fierce but friendly, with students cheering each other on, sharing moments of triumph, and showing grace under pressure. In the end, it was the team from Blessed Sacrament that emerged victorious, representing their school with both wisdom and sportsmanship.

Beyond the excitement of the competition, the Spirit of Wisdom Trivia Contest highlighted something even more important—the power of coming together as a system of schools. Events like these remind us that while each of our campuses has its own unique spirit and community, we are united by a common mission: to educate the whole child—mind, body, and soul—while nurturing faith, character, and a love of lifelong learning.

After the final question was answered and the winning team was announced, students, staff, and guests gathered for lunch, sharing stories and forging connections that go beyond the walls of their individual schools. These moments of fellowship are a testament to the strength and value of system-wide initiatives, which not only enhance student experiences but build a stronger, more connected Erie Catholic family.

Erie Catholic Announces Blessed Sacrament School to Close This Year

Erie, PA – A significant transition is on the horizon for the Erie Catholic School System (ECSS), which announced today that one of its six schools, Blessed Sacrament School, will close at the end of the 2024-25 school year. The system cited continuous decline in enrollment as the largest determining factor.

“This is a very challenging moment for the students, families, staff and administrators at Blessed Sacrament School,” said Ann Carlin, board chair of the Erie Catholic School System. “The Board of Directors know how hard it is to hear this news. But as the board, with the responsibility for nearly 1,800 students enrolled in ECSS, we are committed to taking the steps necessary to ensure healthy and strong Catholic education opportunities remain available in our region.”

Despite its beloved role in the community, enrollment at Blessed Sacrament School has dropped by more than twice that of any other school in the system, with a 52 percent loss since ECSS was established as part of a diocesan-wide school restructuring plan,

. “Our mission remains the same,” Carlin said, “but we need to respond to the realities of today.”

Erie Catholic School System’s over-arching goals include providing students with an academically rigorous course of study in a faith-based environment, instilling a strong moral character, and encouraging a zeal for service to others. The hope is that by streamlining the system, more resources can be used to reinvest in student academic programming and move toward a long-term goal of more equitable pay for faculty and staff. In addition, Carlin said the system is exploring ways to address families’ needs for childcare and early learning opportunities.

The decision has the full support of both Bishop Lawrence Persico and Jim Gallagher, superintendent of schools for the Diocese of Erie.

Before recommending the closure of Blessed Sacrament School, the Erie Catholic School System engaged the services of Meitler Consulting – a national firm focused on Catholic

education – to conduct a growth and vitality study, collecting data from parents, teachers and administrators as well as analyzing financial and operational data from all six schools. The firm worked with a planning committee consisting of principals, central office leadership, board members, the system president, and the Diocesan superintendent over several months to determine the best course of action.

The study focused on enrollment trends, resource limitations, capacity, and how to best create a more sustainable foundation across campuses. It offers a pathway for strengthening academic programs, providing greater support for teachers and students, reinvesting in the remaining schools, and improving facilities.

The study and resulting plan is the first step toward a larger, multi-year strategic planning process that will focus on how Erie Catholic School System can better address the evolving needs of the community. Through this process, Erie Catholic aims to respond to critical issues such as the national teacher shortage, the importance of high school and workforce readiness through a strong foundation in early learning and education, and a lack of childcare in the region — a challenge highlighted in a recent Jefferson Educational Society study.

Erie Catholic is in the final round of interviews for a new president for the system. Dr. Sam Signorino came out of retirement to serve as interim president of Erie Catholic when the need arose in 2023.

“Sam graciously stepped in during a time of need for Erie Catholic and we are grateful for his ongoing service to Catholic education,” said Jim Gallagher, superintendent of Catholic Schools for the Diocese of Erie. “As part of the transition to the next phase of Catholic schools in the Erie region, he has agreed to step aside a few months ahead of schedule.”

The ECSS Board of Directors worked with the Catholic Schools Office to appoint a transition team under the leadership of Janice Whiteman, Transition Director, to ensure a smooth process for school families, faculty, administrators and the school system in the coming months.

“Blessed Sacrament is a school steeped in tradition,” said Sister Katherine Horan, OSB, who has served as principal since 2023. “Our plan is to help our students honor the legacy of those who came before us by finishing the year mustering as much Bulldog pride as possible. We are grateful for all the school has been to so many and will move forward with faith in the future.”

After serving as interim president for the Erie Catholic School System, Dr. Sam Signorino announced he will retire earlier than originally planned, concluding a remarkable 45-year career in education. In his time with Erie Catholic, he strengthened our leadership team, enhanced financial support, and empowered our principals to lead with faith and purpose. The following letter was shared with Erie Catholic families on January 31st:

Today, I am writing to share a personal update and a significant moment in our school system’s journey. After much reflection and prayer, I have decided to retire earlier than originally planned. Starting Monday, Janice Whiteman will lead a transition team and assume daily responsibilities for the Erie Catholic School System. Our Board of Directors is committed to finding the right leader to carry our system forward, and I am confident that Janice and the transition team will ensure a seamless process in the months ahead.

As I step away from my role as president, I do so with immense gratitude for the time I have spent serving this incredible community. It has been a privilege to work alongside our dedicated faculty, staff, and families to provide a faith-filled, academically excellent education for your children. The spirit of Erie Catholic Schools is one of strength, tradition, and unwavering commitment to our mission, and I have no doubt that it will continue to flourish in the years ahead.

After 45 years of service in education, I am proud of the work we’ve accomplished together and the lasting impact it will have on our students. We have strengthened the support system that ensures our schools operate efficiently and effectively. Our restructured tuition plan, incorporating EITC and EDS funding, makes a Catholic education more accessible for families, ensuring that more children can benefit from our faith-based academic excellence. Most importantly, we have empowered a faith-filled team of principals to lead with vision and dedication, creating a nurturing environment where students can grow spiritually, academically, and personally. These efforts lay a strong foundation for the next decade of Erie Catholic, ensuring our students continue to thrive in an education rooted in faith, excellence, and community.

Thank you for your trust, your prayers, and your partnership throughout my time as president. It has been an honor to serve this community, and I will continue to keep you and your families in my prayers.

From January 26–31, students, teachers, and families from Blessed Sacrament, Our Lady of Peace, Saint George, Saint James, Saint Jude, and Saint Luke came together to honor this year’s theme: Catholic Schools: United in Faith and Community.

The Erie Catholic School System (ECSS) proudly celebrates the start of Catholic Schools Week with a special Mass, led by Bishop Lawrence Persico, on Monday, January 27th, at 9:15 AM. The Mass will take place at the Hagerty Family Event Center and will be attended by ECSS students in grades 6 through 8 from all schools in the system.

This year’s Mass theme, “Celebrating Your Community,” highlights the importance of faith, service, and unity within the Erie community. ECSS students will take active roles in the celebration, serving as altar servers, readers, and gift bearers, demonstrating their leadership and commitment to their faith.

Following the Mass, middle school students will extend the celebration into the community through acts of service. Students will visit local organizations, including Saint Patrick’s Haven, the Mercy Center for Women, and parishes connected to ECSS schools, to offer their time and support. This initiative reflects the core values of Catholic education—faith in action and a dedication to helping those in need.

“The Mass and service activities are a powerful way to show our students how they can make a meaningful impact in their community,” said Corey Ferraro, Campus Minister for the Erie Catholic School System. “It’s inspiring to see them embrace both their faith and the spirit of service.”

The Erie Catholic School System is proud to announce that Kelley Damore, a dedicated fourth and fifth-grade teacher at Saint James School, has been named the 2024 Teacher of the Year by the Pennsylvania Friends of Agriculture Foundation. Damore was recognized during the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau Annual Meeting in Hershey for her outstanding commitment to agricultural education.

Damore’s innovative approach to integrating agricultural concepts into core subjects has inspired her students and instilled a deeper understanding of the vital role agriculture plays in their daily lives. Her hands-on lessons and partnerships with local farmers provide students with real-world agricultural experiences, including visits to her family’s farm, where they see first-hand how food is grown and produced.

"Ms. Damore brings incredible energy and passion to her teaching," said Gina Brennan, Principal of Saint James School. "Her ability to connect students with real-world experiences is inspiring, and this recognition highlights the impact she has on her students and the broader community. We are so proud to have her as part of our Saint James family."

As the daughter of a farmer, Damore brings personal passion and authenticity to her teaching. Her efforts have sparked excitement about agriculture among her young learners, creating meaningful connections between classroom concepts and the farming community.

The Ag Institute Teacher of the Year Award, sponsored by the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau Promotion and Education Committee, recognizes teachers who excel at incorporating agricultural education into existing curriculum. Damore’s recognition reflects her exceptional ability to engage students in learning while fostering an appreciation for the agricultural industry.

Saint James School and the Erie Catholic School System are incredibly proud of Kelley Damore’s achievements and her commitment to excellence in education. Her dedication not only benefits her students but also highlights the importance of agricultural literacy in today’s world.

Giving Tuesday, a global day of generosity, is just around the corner, and we are thrilled to join the #iGiveCatholic movement to support our Erie Catholic School System. This is your opportunity to make a lasting impact on our students, teachers, and school communities by funding exciting projects at each of our six campuses.

At Erie Catholic, we are dedicated to providing an exceptional faith-based education, and with your help, we can ensure our schools have the resources they need to thrive. This year, each of our schools has identified a unique project to enhance the educational experience. Here’s how your generosity can make a difference:

, the focus is on improving campus communication through a much-needed upgrade to the school’s PA system. This improvement will ensure better connectivity, safety, and efficiency throughout the school.

Spreading Thanksgiving Joy: A Collaborative Effort Across Erie Catholic Schools

As Thanksgiving approaches, our Erie Catholic School System students are embracing the true spirit of the season—gratitude, kindness, and service. This year, they’ve poured their hearts into a special project: creating “Happy Thanksgiving” cards for the Sisters of Saint Joseph’s Annual Thanksgiving Dinner. These thoughtful cards are more than just a creative activity; they are a reflection of our commitment to fostering compassion, service, and community within our students.

Campus Ministry plays a vital role in our schools, inspiring students to live out their faith through acts of service. By engaging in projects like these, students learn the value of giving back and the joy of uplifting others. The cards will bring cheer to the recipients while reinforcing in our students the importance of sharing God’s love through small, meaningful gestures.

The purpose of this initiative goes beyond simply creating cards—it’s about teaching our students to act with purpose, empathy, and a heart for others. It’s about building a foundation of service that will guide them as they grow into leaders in their families, communities, and beyond.

While this year’s photos highlight the wonderful students of Saint Jude, Saint Luke, and Our Lady of Peace, all of our schools participated in making this Thanksgiving extra memorable for those attending the annual dinner.

Erie, PA – The Erie Catholic School System is proud to announce the launch of its "Light of Christ" initiative, a new program that honors current or former Catholic school teachers and staff members who have made a meaningful impact on students' lives. Honorees are presented with a certificate and commemorative pin during a personal award ceremony as a testament to their dedication to Catholic education and the positive difference they have made in the lives of their students.

The first recipient of the "Light of Christ" award is Jan Blakeslee, a beloved retired Saint Jude School kindergarten teacher, who was nominated by Liam Reitzell. Liam, a former student of Mrs. Blakeslee, went through chemotherapy treatments for a brain tumor while in her class and will be forever grateful for the Christ-like care and compassion she showed him.

"I will never forget that year and all the trips we made back and forth to Pittsburgh,” said Liam Reitzell, who is now a sixth-grade student at Saint Jude School. “I missed quite a bit of school, but Mrs. Blakeslee made sure I never fell behind and was always there checking in on me. Whenever I make money, I put some aside to give, save and spend. I’m glad to be able to use my giving money to honor Mrs. Blakeslee. She was a great teacher, but she was much more than that for me.”

In Medieval times, stained glass was used to illustrate biblical stories and the teachings of the Catholic Church. In the same way that beautiful stained-glass artwork in our churches reflects the light of God, educators reflect that light upon their students each day. Erie Catholic School System’s teachers and administrators go to great lengths to not only impart knowledge, but to model Christ’s love.

The "Light of Christ" program aims to shine a spotlight on that transformative role Catholic school teachers and staff members play in shaping the hearts and minds of their students, past and present. By allowing individuals to contribute in honor of a teacher who has made a difference, the initiative serves to celebrate the enduring impact of Catholic education and the values it instills in the community.

“We are thrilled to launch this initiative and celebrate Jan Blakeslee as our first honoree,” said Nicole Reitzell, Vice President of Advancement for the Erie Catholic School System. “Her story, like that of so many of our dedicated educators, reflects the light of Christ that shines in our six schools each day.”

The Erie Catholic School System invites current school families and alumni from any Catholic school to make a gift in honor or memory of an educator who reflected the Light of Christ in their lives.
