In Kindergarten at Blessed Sacrament School we offer instruction in areas of Religion, Reading, Math, Science, and Social Studies along with attending specials each week. We also attend mass weekly starting in the middle of September.

We begin each morning with prayers, then we move into circle where we pray for our special intentions. Our circle routine consists of daily calendar, weather, counting, shapes, and a story. During this time we may review items from the lessons.

In Religion we discuss how God loves us and gave us Jesus. Students learn several prayers. We discuss creation, the Holy Family, Bible stories, saints, and Holy Days. Most of all we discuss God's love and how He wants us to treat each other.

In Reading, we begin the year with a review of letter recognition and sounds. From there they use the sounds to begin blending and segmenting words. As the year progresses students will work on reading fluency and comprehension skills. The first sight words are introduced within the first month and added to weekly.

Writing skills are also developed by teaching the students that sentences start with an uppercase letter, end with a punctuation mark, and have proper spacing between words. Other skills taught within our Language Arts time include: rhyming, compound words, sequencing, cause and effect, syllables, compare/contrast, drawing conclusions, the writing process, and parts of speech.

In Math, we review patterning, sorting, and 2D and 3D shapes. We then move into numbers to 100 where we discuss place value, composing and decomposing numbers. We also focus on addition and subtraction facts to 10, telling time to the hour and half hour, identifying coins, counting money, fractions and graphs.

Science is integrated into our reading stories along with monthly STREAM projects. We discuss plants, weather, magnets, matter, and animals to name a few.

Social Studies is also integrated into our reading stories. We also discuss community, families, famous historical people, and holidays.
